Hedges Creek Marsh
|
Our first property holding has grown from a 1982 donation of 1.2 acres to its
current size in the center of Tualatin. Hedges
Creek, once a year-round stream, is now only seasonal because of new
construction within the basin. Fifty years ago you could catch trout in Hedges
Creek. The marsh, about two miles long, is located in downtown Tualatin and is
bounded almost entirely by industrial and commercial development. In spite of
this, the marsh continues to attract a wide variety of wildlife.

Wildlife
Deer, coyote, fox and river otter can
occasionally be seen in the area, and beaver and raccoon are abundant in the
marsh. Ducks include mallards, wood duck, hooded merganser, American wigeon,
bufflehead, cinnamon teal and ring-necked ducks. Canada geese nest in the
marsh and Virginia rail, sora, pied-billed grebe and kingfisher are
residents. Songbirds include red-winged blackbird, common yellowthroat, and
marsh wrens, while tree, violet-green and barn swallows patrol the air above
the marsh. Birds of prey include barn and great-horned owls, red-tailed hawk
and northern harrier. Great blue herons are common and in recent years great
egrets have been seen. Over sixty species of birds have been listed over the
years.
